Mile 469

The stretch between Hot Springs, NC and Damascus, VA was a scenic one, but the wettest hiking yet. After leaving Erwin, TN thunderstorms were frequent so feet were mostly wet. Scott Jurek, the ultra-marathon runner trying to break the fastest AT hike-run past us in Ash Gap during the evening. Unfortunately, I was in my sleeping bag when he came through.

Luna, the trail dog, at White Rock Cliffs.

The view at Blackstack Cliffs.

Up on Big Bald with thunderstorms closing in.
The trail over Big Stamp.

The Nolichucky River coming into Erwin, TN

Making good food while staying at Uncle Johnny’s in Erwin, TN.
The highlands north of Carver Gap:

Looking back on the Roan highlands.

An interesting ride back to the trail from a resupply in Hampton, TN. One old Buick, two locals named John, and at least a few open cans of Busch.

Laurel Fork Falls, the best swimming hole of the trip so far.

Watauga Lake picnic area, the second swim of the day and a nice place for dinner.

Not a good section of the trail to be camping, or night hiking. Since camping was not permitted we tried to hike through late and came across a bear cub and mama bear in the dark. Mom didn’t want to go away with baby bear up in the tree so we had to back track a couple miles to camp for the night.

Looking down at Watauga Lake from Vendeventer shelter.

Farm field, with a bench and a view, on the last evening in Tennessee. A great spot to dry out after getting soaked in an afternoon thunderstorm.

  1. Dan, great post and images! Growing up in Virginia, I hiked much of the AT in that state over the years, pieces at a time. Takes me back to the good old days. Joe

  2. Thanks Joe! I'm in the thick of VA now, currently near Roankoke. Looking forward to the north half.
